How To Safely Pack Your Wedding Dress for Wrinkle-Free Travel

You spend months planning your wedding day abroad but are you uncertain about how to safely pack your wedding dress to keep it from getting wrinkled? I've reached out to the major airlines to discover that each airline has a different approach to this issue. In this article I will discuss these various approaches so you can make the most informed decision before purchasing your tickets.

Of course, each of these airlines offers the option to rent space in the luggage compartment but if you want your clothes to be specially protected from moisture, wrinkles, etc., you should know that there are other options available. Let's see how each of these airlines has addressed the issue:

  1. Lufthansa Airlines

When it comes to traveling with special items, different airline companies offer different solutions to make your journey easier. Recently, I reached out to the staff at Lufthansa Cargo to learn which solutions they offer when handling items of great importance - because we both know how much time you invest in finding that dress that just feels right... So if you’re traveling with Lufthansa Airlines and you want to take special care of your wedding attire you’ll have two options:

  1. Some Lufthansa flights offer special lockers for storing your wedding attire, ensuring it remains wrinkle-free and undamaged (to confirm whether your flight has these lockers, simply inquire with the staff at the airport counter). Not everyone is aware of these lockers, making them a true game-changer for keeping your dress in pristine condition, protected from any travel mishaps.

  2. If there’s not a special locker available at your flight you can always send the dress as a special package via flight transport.

  1. British Airways

If you choose to travel with British Airways and are embarking on a long-haul flight, you can inquire with the cabin crew about the possibility of hanging your dress or suit. While they will do their best to accommodate you, please keep in mind that hanging space is limited—particularly on busy flights.

If you’re flying short-haul, unfortunately, there’s no wardrobe space available on those flights, so you’ll need to pack your outfit carefully into your hand baggage. In that case, consider calling the airline at least 24 hours before your flight. That way, you can check if it’s possible to purchase an extra seat next to yours. This way, you can keep your wedding outfit snug and safe, traveling right by your side.

In the end, whether it’s a hang-up in the cabin or a well-packed outfit in your bag, just remember: your wedding day is all about you. With a little planning, your attire will be ready to shine on your special day, no matter how you travel!

  1. Ryanair

This low-cost airline is known for its budget-friendly fares and let’s be honest, who doesn’t love saving a little cash when jetting off on an adventure?

But before you go and purchase a ticket, you should know that they are somewhat limited in transporting your luggage. Unlike Lufthansa and British Airways, they don’t offer special storage units or lockers for safely placing your belongings. Therefore, if you plan to transfer your wedding attire across the ocean, you will need to buy an extra seat on the plane—essentially, you’ll want to purchase a ticket just as you would for an adult person.

  1. Scandinavian Airlines

If you choose to travel with Scandinavian Airlines, you can bring your wedding dress which is considered special luggage. However, keep in mind that space on each aircraft is limited, so it’s essential to secure space for your wedding attire as soon as possible. All requested special baggage must be confirmed before departure.

Your wedding dress will not incur an extra fee if it fits within the checked baggage allowance included in your ticket; if it doesn’t, you will need to pay for additional baggage.

  1. Delta Airlines

Delta Airlines really understands that wedding attire requires extra care and attention, at the check-in desk the Delta agent will walk you through the process. They’ll help you check your special item and assess whether it needs any extra handling based on size and weight.

If you’ve packed more than just the essentials—like an over-sized gown or a tux with some extra pieces—you might face an additional fee for being overweight or over-sized. But don’t fret; the gate agent will clarify everything, so there are no surprises when you reach your destination.

Whichever airline company you choose, I am sure they will handle your special attire the best way possible but before making a reservation don’t be afraid to contact their customer service if you have any more questions - I am sure they will be happy to answer them all!
